Japanese education companies target China market

A Nikkei report that looks at the entrance of Japanese education companies into the Chinese market notes that parents are increasingly keen to provide education for their kids.

Yamaha operates music schools in Beijing, Shanghai and 15 other locations and enrolled 5,200 students last year, up 1,700 on the year previous. The company hopes to increase the number of its school locations to 40 and boost students to over 40 in the next 2 years.

Benesse currently has 340,000 subscribers to its correspondence courses and will up its number of showrooms and sales offices from 15 to 60 in this business year, targeting 1 million subscribers over the next five years.

Kumon Institute of Education Co.'s mathematics and English drill courses saw a 10% rise over the past year and. Nagase Brothers, a cram school operator, plans to launch English classes in China. Shane English Schools is also rapidly expanding in China and is finding it difficult to employ enough native-English teachers to meet demand.
