Stats Corner: The Market for Kids' English in Japan

Teaching-English-in-Japan-Education-Kids-English" According to the Japan Times, there are currently 7.08 million elementary school children of which around 1 in 4 (1.77 million) have been enrolled in correspondence courses with Benesse.

ECC Junior claims to have approximately 200,000 elementary school pupils enrolled in their classes and have 10,000 classrooms across the country.

160,000 elementary school pupils took the Eiken in 2009 according to the Society for Testing English Proficiency, a non-profit foundation in Tokyo that administers the tests.

The junior version of Eiken — Jido Eiken — stresses listening skills designed for young children, and attracts around 90,000 takers a year according to STEP.
