"Eigo Noto" (English Notebook), the set of English-teaching materials designed for primary school English classes will continue to be distributed in printed form after all. The set of materials were designed to assist teachers faced with teaching English as a compulsory subject in primary schools from 2011 and were becoming popular with many Japanese English teachers. However a decision last November to digitise the materials and make them only available on the Internet from 2011has been met with over 2,000 emails and phone calls protesting the move. Faced with this the education ministry reviewed the decision and recognised that the total cost of downloading and printing out the materials at each school was more expensive than paying for the materials to be printed and distributed centrally.
English classes will be compulsory in all primary schools from April, 2011.
