A Japanese software company, Eagle Inc, has developed an iphone app that generates real time transcripts of spoken English language conversations. The Tokyo firm will market the software, dubbed TalkWriter, to travelers to English-speaking regions as well as immigrants in such countries. The company hopes for 10,000 downloads in the first year.

The Nikkei Shimbun reports: 'Using a voice-recognition technology from start-up Inferret Japan KK, the software sends voice data to a server every four seconds, and displays the written text on the phone screen. The transcription accuracy is around 70%. Users can also look up English words in their mother tongue by simply touching on the words on the handset display. This feature is available in 100 languages, using Google Inc.'s dictionary function. The software will sell for 600 yen, or 4.99 dollars, for 60 minutes of recording time.'

The Eagle Inc. website states: ' TalkWriter will enable you to carry on natural conversations with native English speakers. It is capable of performing real-time dictation for English conversations and, when you touch or tap the transcription text, it will automatically translate selected vocabulary items into your native language, and record them to your personalized vocabulary list for later reference.
