Birmingham MA in TEFL/TESL to focus more on teaching young learners

The University of Birmingham MA in TEFL/TESL, the most popular distance MA of its kind taken by teachers in Japan, is introducing a specialist option in teaching young learners. The option will be available from this October. If you are interested in applying for the course or would like more information, click here to send an e-mail.

Many teachers of children already take the Birmingham MA and write assignments for the general modules based on their experience teaching children. They are also able to write their dissertation on some aspect of teaching children that specially interests them. However, until now there has been no specialist young learners option.

The new option covers the following topics:
• What is a young learner?
• Language in the young learner classroom.
• Focus on literacy: Reading and writing.
• Teaching grammar and lexis.
• Materials and resources.
• Classroom management.
• Young learner assessment.
• Coursebook and syllabus.
• Young learners in Asia.
• Teaching young learners with special needs.
