Maruzen and Junkudo likely to merge

maruzen.jpg

The Nikkei Shimbun reports that Maruzen, Junkudo and TRC, which sells books to libraries, are likely to merge. All three are subsidiaries of Dai Nippon Printing Co. Dai Nippon took control of Maruzen last August and of Junkudo last week. As a first step, Maruzen and Junkudo will be forming business tie-ups.

The Nikkei reports that 'with sales of more than 130 billion yen a year, the combined company would surpass top-ranked Kinokuniya, which has annual sales of about 120 billion yen.' They went on to say that 'nationwide sales of published materials are...down more than 20% from a peak in 1997. Consolidation among chains is likely to intensify as booksellers fight for survival.'
