Government advised to drastically increase subsidies to universities

The Daily Yomiuri reports that the government panel on education has called for a drastic increase in public subsidies to national and private universities so as to raise academic standards.

The panel reports that, 'Universities are dependent largely on private funds such as tuition fees for their operating budgets and because of this they tend to secure students for the sake of stable flow of funds regardless of their scholastic ability, resulting in the degrading of the quality of students and education.'
