Student visa rules to be eased

From April 2009 it will be easier to get a student visa in Japan and stay for a longer period. Two categories, 'Shugaku' (for language and high school students) and 'Ryugaku' (for university students) will also be combined. This will make it possible for students to attend both language schools and universities at the same time.

The government aims to increase the number of students in Japan to 300,00 by 2020 compared to 123,800 in May 2008.
