Debaters Wanted by English Speaking Union
The English-Speaking Union of Japan (ESUJ) will be holding the sixth parliamentary-style debate competition for participants other than university students on Saturday, 9th June -- and is looking for debaters! The competition is intended to be an enjoyable opportunity for working persons and adults to exercise their English-language skills of persuasion. Each team of two people must include at least one non-native speaker. ESUJ Councilor Russell Willis commented "This is a great chance for working adults to get involved in debate and demonstrate their skills of persuasion."

Do Suru? Beacon Head Talks to Nikkei Weekly Show
Nicolas Menat, head of Beacon Communications, the advertising agency behind the cute Chihuahua in the Aiful consumer loan ads talks with broadcaster Peter Barakan in the latest Nikkei Weekly Interview. German Giant Mulls Thomson Learning Takeover
German media giant Bertelsmann is considering the acquisition of Thomson Learning, which the Thomson corporation put up for sale late last year.
Bertelsmann has done a deal with Citigroup Private Equity and Morgan Stanley to create a fund of £2.5bn which will give Bertelsmann the right to take a minority share in information companies with a view to an outright acquisition. According to the Financial Times, Thomson Learning is the first acquisition being considered. Bertelsmann owns publishing company Random House amongst other media properties. (April 16, 2007

LADO Goes Bankrupt - 4,000 without Classes
English conversation school chain LADO has gone bankrupt with debts of around 20 million dollars. LADO closed its doors without warning on April 5th leaving 4,000 students without classes. Some inside sources have suggested that part of the reason for the bankruptcy was the high cost of licensing the Spiderman character and ineffective use of the character in Lado's marketing.
