Japan's Top Debaters Crowned

The Japan Parliamentary Debate Union crowned the nation's top debaters in an event held this past November 25th and 26th. The 1st JPDU Supernova Cup, the event attracted 112 debaters in 56 teams from 29 universities across the country. Once the topics had been raised, and the arguments made, Ms. Satomi Hemmi and Mr. Takuma Sasaki, representing Team C of International Christian University, won the event. The victorious ICU team actually faced another pair of ICU debaters in the finals. Third place was shared by a team from Osaka University, and one from the University of Kitakyushu. Topics ranged from Japan's right to possess nuclear arms, to the legacy of American President George Bush.

The next competition, the 11th JPDU tournament, is to be held on December 9th and 10th at International Christian University and Seikei University. This is a preparatory tournament for the upcoming World Universities Debating Championship to be held in Vancouver, Canada from December 27th, 2006 to January 4th, 2007.
