Controversial Communicative English

There were a couple of interesting letters recently on the web site of the Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star, indicating a current debate taking place in that country. Both writers denounced the Communicative approach to teaching English, at least as it applies to their country's university students. As one writer put it: "As a poor nation, we must learn English purely for economic reasons. It should not be driven by the urge of Anglophile or Bangla phobia. We have to learn English. But it can't happen through the Communicative Method." Read the letters (link may not be maintained).
