English Teacher Mauled by Bear

An English teacher was attacked by a bear while hiking on a nature trail in the mountain resort area of Karuizawa at the weekend. The 41-year old woman from the UK was reported to have been mauled and received injuries requiring 10 days' treatment. The bear, which is believed to have been protecting two cubs, drew itself to its full height and attacked the woman as she approached. Police said they were searching for the animals in the surrounding mountains.
