English Picture Books in Demand

Imports of English picture books hit an all-time high of 10,720,000 in 2001, according to Tokyo customs authorities. The figure has shown a consistent 10% annual rise since 1998. The increase was earlier attributed to mothers wanting to give their young children a head start in their English studies. But now that English is being taught even in elementary schools, many of the imports have been by the schools themselves.
