GEOS

I would like to hear from anyone who has worked for this organization - I read somewhere on this site that if you don't have students, you don't get paid - is this correct?

And are teachers expected to bring in new students when they are not teaching?  I am just concerned that your salary is based on whether you have students or not....

Old wives tale. Teachers do NOT work for free in Japan. Teachers at GEOS are on a monthly salary. Dont get paid, mess with teachers salaries and watch teachers rush for the exits.  M any are married and have mortgages and I cant see them putting up with employers cutting their salaries because of drops in students.

Glenski I think often mentions there is a 'sales' aspect to working at GEOS. Students are the lifeblood of any eikaiwa and if there are less students it means less money and profits. to save money they will cut part timers or work the teachers harder.

Never worked at GEOS but you are expected to encourage students to renew contracts, buy more lessons or invest in expensive teaching materials. the japanese staff do the hard sell but you are expected to promote the company. Teachers shoud realise they work for a company where the primary goal is PROFIT> GEOS is a business and needs students to stay in business. 99% of teachers simply think their job is to turn up to work and teach who ever is put in front of them.

I worked for GEOS for 5 years, and basically Paulh is spot on with what he says. Don't let the sales aspect put you off though. Like Paul says, it's the school managers who do the hard sell, and it's them who cop the flak if sales are poor. For foreign teachers it's really no more than a minor irritant.
