Internet Service in Japan
Apr 22nd, 2006, 6:17pm

Hey!

I am about to move to Japan and will need Internet Service for my computer- anyone know of any good, affordable providers out there?

(I will be living in the Kansai area and just need something basic; not phone service or anything.)

Thanks!

You are probably talking about a high speed broadband Internet connection. I have Yahoo BB which costs me about 4,000 yen a month in fees. You can also use your computer as a telephone too, through http://www.skype.com and a headset.

In Tokyo i had a fiber optic connection. It was 4,500/month and blows the doors off of any sort of DSL connection. No really...it makes Yahoo BB look like dial up.

That's a good point to look for before deciding on an apartment to rent. I got caught once with an apartment that could only give a very slow DSL connection...I moved again within 4 months.

An added advantage to using Yahoo BB is that you can call any number in the US of A, maybe Canada, for about 7 yen for 3 minutes. I emphasize any because that means the other party doesn't need to be using a computer. For business that can save serious money.

Calling a party in Japan that also uses Yahoo BB also saves a lot of money.

If you use AIM you can talk for free.. all day long audio. Of course the other person must have high speed and AIM as well. Often used by businesses but not so much yet. Cant beat free.

Basic Skype service is also free, and with the latest version, you can not only send and receive audio from computer to computer, but you can transmit and receive web cam LIVE video.  Skype has been lauded by many people as having the best audio quality.

Yeah they got the live video on AIM too. You have to have a firewire cam to have it smooth though. I do firewire cam on it to japan all the time and its perfect with no delays or problems. Like the person is in the next room.
