Introduction
For many years, those living in Japan who wanted to get an internationally
recognized qualification in Japanese Studies had to give up their jobs and got to Sheffield to
do an MA. Since 1996 this has not been necessary. The MA in Advanced Japanese Studies can be done
without leaving Japan.
This MA course is widely recognized as being the leading course of its kind. The School of East Asian
Studies was recently given an official rating of "Excellent" for teaching, the highest
possible rating.
Course Description
There may be an orientation weekend at the beginning of the course, held in Hiroshima and Tokyo.
There are also two one-week residentials in Hiroshima held in August of each year, and a two-day
examination at the end of the course. Apart from this, everything can be done from home and while
working full time.
The course lasts 24 months with a further six months to complete an extended translation or a 15-20,000 word
dissertation. Under some circumstances it may be possible to complete the course outside Japan.
Distance learning can be a lonely way of studying. In recognition of this, there is extensive local
suport for each course, on top of the support provided directly by the university. Each student is
assigned to a Japan-based tutor. Staff at David English House provide advice and
efficient administrative assistance. Students are encouraged to form study groups and take part
in discussions on the internet.
